Mercedes-Benz S Class has clearly heated up things this year and have done absolutely everything to keep their customers interested. New cars, updates to the older generations, they've just ramped up their entire line. This time around though, they have done that to the most luxurious Mercedes-Benz to arrive on the scene - the S-Class.
In its 6th generation now, the S-class had to pick up the baton of the now defunct Maybach brand and further enhance its credibility as the best car in the world. To begin with, its size can only be described as humongous. Its got sheer road presence to keep all your senses involved. It's got a massive front grille and huge all-LED headlights and this is the first time that Mercedes has designed the S-class with a long wheelbase version right from the outset.
The chassis gets more than 50 percent aluminium content with plenty of high strength steel and this is why the S-Class which looks like a mammoth, weighs in at only 2200kgs. The chassis is suspended by the standard air suspension and adaptive dampers that feature Active Body Control.
Inside is a chamber meant for kings and Mercedes-Benz does not disappoint. It gets a two-spoke wood and leather adorned steering, two large 31.2cm displays (placed side by side) -- one for speedo, tacho, the optional night-vision camera and car info and one for the comprehensive COMAND system. Then there is the 24-speaker Burmester audio system, massage seats with pillows and standard Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity.
The venerable S-Class stands out as an elite standard among luxury sedans. Regal, yet athletic in appearance, it is distinguished by its signature chrome grill, all-LED exterior lighting, sleek body lines, and big body stature. Swarovski crystal headlights are available for the S550 Coupe 4MATIC. Standard features include a panoramic moonroof, a power trunk lid, soft-close doors, air suspension, and 19-inch wheels. Sport body styling and larger 20-inch wheels are also available.
All trim models except the S600 is powered by a standard 449-hp, 4.7-liter V-8 engine mated to a 7-speed automatic transmission and rear- or all-wheel drive. The S600 has a 523-hp, twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V-12 engine paired to the same transmission and layout options. Fuel efficiency for the S550 is an EPA-estimated 17/26 mpg city/highway. It slightly drops to a 16/26 mpg rating for the S550 4MATIC and 16/24 mpg for the S550 Coupe 4MATIC. The S600 is rated 14/21 mpg.
Inside, the S-Class has a handcrafted, luxurious cabin. All S-Class trims have standard leather upholstery with a wood trim, ambient lighting, and a cabin fragrance system. In place of traditional gauges and instrumentation, information and entertainment are displayed through standard dual 12.3-inch widescreens built into the dashboard. Other standard features include an integrated navigation system, dual-zone climate control, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, satellite radio, an in-dash hard drive for audio files and playback, and a surround audio system. Heated/ventilated front and rear seats, four-zone climate control, a refrigerator box for the rear, WiFi hotspot, a rear seat entertainment system, and a Burmester premium audio system are available as well.
Standard safety features include an advanced airbag system, antilock brakes, an electronic stability system, forward collision warning, braking assist, driver drowsiness monitoring, a backup camera, rain-sensing wipers, and a tire-pressure monitoring system. Night view assist, blind spot assist, cross traffic assist, parking assist, and a surround view camera system for parking and slow driving are also available.
